How the ranking works
The same numbers behind every question.
1. Count the corpus
Every language starts as OpenSubtitles v2018 + v2024 — millions of lines of recorded speech. Words are counted using each language's own rules, so writing systems without spaces between words are handled properly.
2. Promote the phrases
Repeated word sequences that stick together are ranked alongside single words, because knowing them as units is what fluency actually looks like.
3. Rank and translate
The most frequent 12,000 words and phrases in each language get a rank and an English translation. Nothing is fetched or translated while you play.
